Beggar's Night

Here in Ohio we trick-or-treat on Beggar's Night, which may or may not fall on Halloween.  Our town determined that this year Beggar's Night would be Thursday the 30th.

Mary thought she should get to walk the whole way.  She also got a lot of candy--that David got to keep.  Baby sisters aren't all bad.  The best part is when David greeted people at the door with an enthusiastic "Happy Halloween!!" (instead of "trick or treat").  He also stopped to admire every one's Halloween decorations.

P.S.  We first thought Beggar's Night was a remnant of some centuries-old tradition.  But it seems it started not too long ago as a way to minimize mischief, by avoiding the combination of Halloween, a weekend, and trick-or-treating all on one evening.

P.P.S.  Grandma Evie is here!
