They had been washed, folded, and placed in her drawer over a month ago. Yet each evening I pushed them aside and reached for the faded footed sleepers. Then I would proceed to squish Mary into the too-small one-piece, struggling with every snap--the poor girl couldn't even stretch out her legs completely once I managed to force her inside. But the other night Greg got her dressed for bed, and there she was, wearing her BIG GIRL JAMMIES. She was so cute in her new pajamas! Why had I been so reluctant to dress her in them? I did the same thing when David was a baby. Some moms get excited and/or sentimental about the first hair cut, new teeth, starting solids, or first steps. My kids get a whole page in their baby books dedicated to
two-piece pajamas. I guess we moms all have those milestones we look for that signify our children are growing up.
So it's official. Mary has transitioned to big girl jammies. She's growing up. But I'm glad that while she's wearing those big girl jammies, she's still plenty small enough to hold and cuddle and rock to sleep.

P.S. Last winter I noticed one piece footed sleepers at Target--big enough for a twelve-year-old! Hmmm...so if I'm ever feeling really nostalgic...Dad will have to intervene and rescue his children from big-kid-plastic-footed-zippered-one-piece-sleeper doom.
